Obituary

Mr. Morris Herring, a husband, father, and loyal friend, surrounded by his family, was called to rest in his eternal home on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

On Saturday, September 30, 1939, the late Equilla Jones and the late Hanson Herring welcomed their beloved son, Morris Herring, into this world in Tallahassee, Florida. Morris was born, raised, and educated in Tallahassee and attended the original Old Lincoln High School.

After high school, Mr. Herring met Miss Virginia Margaret Williams. This meeting led to a lifelong love story, which was made official on Friday, November 2, 1962, as Morris and Virginia became one. From this union, they raised four children: Wilbert, Gregory, Kiwanis “Kim,” and Angela. Their union lasted more than 63 years, until he departed this life.

Morris and Virginia’s home was built by Morris’ own hands and established through his natural knowledge of carpentry and construction. Their home became a gathering place for family, friends, and friends of friends. Whether the occasion was Christmas, Thanksgiving, FAMU Homecoming, sporting events, crab boils, fish fries, or simply debating local politics and news events, Morris was the quiet, yet boisterous when needed, moderator of the group.

A unique builder and talented painter, Morris worked in the Leon County area his entire career, including with the Trailways Transportation System as a mechanic. He later retired from the City of Tallahassee Water Department. Morris’ talent exceeded that of trained experts. A quick study and accurate decision-maker, his work was never left undone.

A child of God, Morris was a member of Greater Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church of Tallahassee.

A protector and provider, Morris led by example and followed through with action. He was a present parent, a good grandfather, and a fantastic fisherman.

Mr. Herring leaves behind to cherish the memories of his love: his devoted, unwavering, and dedicated wife, Virginia Margaret Herring; two sons, Wilbert Watkins (Erlinda) and Gregory Herring; two daughters, Kiwanis “Kim” Dickey and Angela Herring-Hilliard; one grandson, Antoine J. Dickey; his father-in-law, WWII Veteran Joseph Williams; one brother, Minister Isaac Herring; two nephews, Dominique Perry and Blake Perry; cousins, Judy Cooper and Pam Cooper; a bonus son, Duine Henry; a cousin-in-law, Margie C. McCutcheon; and a host of other family and friends.

Morris was preceded in death by his mother and father, Equilla Jones and Hanson Herring; his sister, Mary Herring; his mother-in-law, Annie C. Balkman; his son-in-law, Marion A. Hilliard; and his cousin-in-law, Dollie L. Franklin.
