From the moment he was born, Jamaal demonstrated extraordinary strength and determination. Despite the challenges of Spina Bifida, he embraced life with a radiant smile and a heart full of courage. He cherished time with his family, especially his cousins, Jarrell, Kiauna, Kristopher, and Shonnie, whom he grew up with like siblings. Later he formed a special bond with his cousin, Kessha, who held a special place in his heart.
Jamaal’s vibrant spirit was undeniable. He was the poster child for the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, a platform that allowed him to share his joy and positivity with the world. At the age of eight, Jamaal accepted Christ at Heavenly Powers Ministries, a decision that guided his life and fueled his unwavering optimism.
His educational journey was marked by perseverance and accomplishment. After attending schools in Broward County, Florida, Jamaal graduated from Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Arizona, in 2010. While in Arizona, he thrived as a member of the Phoenix Suns Wheelchair Basketball League from 2007 to 2009, earning recognition from Gilbert Mayor John Lewis.
Jamaal pursued higher education at Merced College in California, focusing on computer graphics design. In 2013, he and his mother relocated to Tallahassee, Florida, where Jamaal embraced new opportunities and independence. For eight years, he proudly worked at the Department of Education, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, which was a testament to his dedication and strong work ethic.
Amongst his proudest milestones were earning his driver’s license, and purchasing a custom minivan in 2018. Equipped with adaptive technology, the van symbolized his independence and determination. Jamaal was delighted in taking road trips to share his achievements with loved ones, bringing smiles and inspiration wherever he went.
A true sports enthusiast, Jamaal found joy in traveling to the Caribbean Islands of the Bahamas, Cayman, Dominican Republic, and Mexico, and cheering on his favorite basketball team, the Los Angeles Lakers. His passions brought light to his life and those around him.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Alphonzo Rowe, and his paternal grandfather, Jack Gerve; his maternal great-grandparents, Selvin Cobb, Sr. and Nina C. Cobb.
He leaves behind a devoted family to honor his memory: his mother, Deleta LaFrey Gipson (Kenneth) of Tallahassee, FL; his father, Erode Gerve (Marie) of Port St. Lucie, FL; brothers, Theodore and Roody Gerve of Waterloo, IA; sisters, Roseline and Veronique Gerve of Port St. Lucie, FL; maternal grandmother, Jeanette Cobb-Rowe of Gifford, FL; paternal grandmother, Veronique Cornielle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; aunts, Sonya Rowe, Erose Paul, and Leoni Tima of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; uncles, Emmanuel Tima, and Venio Gerve, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Jamaal’s legacy lives on through great aunts, great uncles, cousins, and countless friends who were touched by his kindness and determination. His niece, Khloe Fuller; a devoted friend, Delroy Henry; and his extended family will forever cherish the joy he brought into their lives.
Jamaal Francis Gerve’s life was a celebration of courage, faith, and love. His memory will inspire all who knew him, reminding us to live boldly, love deeply, and embrace each day with gratitude.
